Peru - Diamante Verde School - Complete (2021)

Our 2021 community is in the San Martin region of Peru and again in the Moyobamba Province with within the Sol Naciente (Rising Sun) Community. We have partnered with the Diamante Verde producer group and they have identified the need for a school infrastructure and access to potable water. In Peru, if a community has a school, the country will provide a teacher so setting up the infrastructure is key to getting an educator.

The Diamente Verde community has a population of 362 residents where over 90 are children under the age of 18.  As of September 2021, 48 of the children are school-aged and can attend primary or secondary school.  The goal of our school project here is to help new generations study in a safe and proper environment.

On May 17, 2021 our community received permits to begin building and construction quickly began and then slowed down due to heavy rains in the area.  Fast forward to September 2021 and the rainy season has passed and we are 75% done with the school build.

The good news is that we were not starting from scratch and there was a basic school structure in place but it was in need of repairs and upgrades.  We started by polishing it up and adding structure with bricks, doing plaster work on the building, followed by adding a corrugated iron roof and then added some paint to the outside of the building.  Then onto the gutters which have been repurposed to also receive rainwater.  Inside the building the electrical has also been completed.

We continue to work on the inside of the building with develop a sewage treatment plan and getting the septic tank set up.  As of September 2021, we continue to make progress on this.  We also continue to work on installation of water networks and drainage, adding facilities, lights, fixtures, doors, kitchen equipment and finishes.
